Anyway, here’s a lovely Tiny Desk Concert featuring our next interviewee, Jana Hunter, playing with her band Lower Dens. They don’t play “A Dog’s Dick,” but they do play the equally dirty-sounding “Two Cocks…” as well as the beautiful “I Get Nervous,” another song that makes it into my personal playlists more than is probably healthy.

SXSW is one of the few places you get to see rock shows during breakfast. Sharon Van Etten’s outstanding 2010 album Epic goes great with mornings, so the New York songwriter was an obvious pick for KUT’s early broadcasts from the Hilton in downtown Austin.

The wait is over for an official studio recording from WILD FLAG, the recently formed band featuring former NPR Music blogger and Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony (Helium), Janet Weiss (Quasi, Sleater-Kinney) and Rebecca Cole (The Minders). Though a handful of songs captured at live shows have been circulating on the web, the band hasn’t put out a proper recording, and won’t until April 16. That’s when the group celebrates Record Store Day by dropping two new cuts on 7-inch vinyl: “Future Crimes” backed with “Glass Tambourine.”

Singer-songwriter PJ Harvey just released her eighth album, Let England Shake, a mournful elegy about war and the political landscape in her native England.
The album’s topics are brutal and bitter. Soldiers, landscapes and limbs are yanked apart, “falling like lumps of meat / blown and shot out beyond belief / arms and legs in the trees.” In “All and Everyone,” death permeates everything — the air, the sounds “coming off the mounds,” even “the laughter and drinking water.”
